The Beginning

On the first day of the war, Russia’s strategy was to aggressively plough through both sides of Ukraine to cut off the bottom half of the country and claim the territory as its own. The western port city of Odessa, located on the Black Sea, and the eastern city of Kharkiv, near the Russian border, were targeted for heavy bombing and ground invasion. Both cities held their ground. What was supposed to be a swift and easy victory, turned into an embarrassing start of the war for the Russians.

“My kids play here. My dog shits in these woods.

This is my home. They can’t fucking have it.”

- Dmitriy

On February 17, 2022, Ukrainian pro race car driver, Dmitriy Illyuk, returned from a competition abroad to find his hometown of Odessa on the brink of invasion. That night, he and his family were shaken awake to rockets streaming over the house and thudding into the airfield just a kilometer away. The following 48 hours were chaotic and harrowing, as they attempted to find shelter and searched for a way to get out of the country. Once his wife and two sons were safely across the border into Moldova, Dmitriy returned home and searched for a way he could help repel a ruthless enemy invading his homeland

WRONG PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME

  • Supposed Ukrainian separatists seize control of Crimea. Their green fatigues bear no insignia identifying loyalty to any country. Suspiciously, several buildings they target are neither military nor governmental, including an opera house. This suggests the “little green men” were not from the region.

Dmitriy and Ana were visiting her grandfather on his deathbed. He passed and the day after they left, the hospital was leveled in the attack.

  • Russia begins a siege on Kherson, carpet bombing the entire city, decimating the town center, and destroying the historic capital building.

Dmitriy and friends delivered aid to people in the city and departed the center minutes before the attack.

  • Ukrainian underground resistance members use a drone boat to destroy the bridge that connects Crimea to the Russian mainland.

A friend requested spark plugs from Dmitriy, which he promptly delivered with no knowledge of how they would be used. Two weeks later he received a text from his friend with an image of a news article about the bridge. He captioned it with, “Spark plugs worked 😄👍🏻”

  • In Odessa, Russian rockets destroy a block of buildings where local military leaders were gathered for a meeting.

The attack was only 400 meters from Dmitriy’s house, which he had just left to go to the gym. He drove by the destroyed buildings, minutes after the blast, where people were attempting to rescue survivors from the rubble.

“For some reason, I didn’t stop to help get the wounded get out. I don’t know why. I just kept driving.”

A few moments later, the Russian’s hit the same location again, killing everyone in the area.

  • Russia bombs the majority of the power stations in southern and eastern Ukraine, sending the country into a complete blackout.

The morning before the attack, Dmitriy left the country to visit his family in Switzerland.

  • Dmitriy and his wife Ana took a selfie from the top of the World Trade Center Tower in New York City.

RAW & VISCERAL

WAR MACHINES unfolds in a Ukraine caught in the throes of present-day conflict; a landscape scarred by war yet still clinging to remnants of its haunting beauty.

The setting is a character in its own right, oscillating between the rubble-strewn streets of besieged cities and the sprawling, desolate countryside that tells its own tale of neglect and devastation. Amidst this backdrop, our characters navigate through once-bustling towns now ghostly and silent, past buildings pockmarked with the scars of battle.

Yet, in this desolation, there's a stark beauty — the resilient sunsets painting the sky above the war-torn structures, the stubborn wildflowers breaking through cracks in the asphalt. This dichotomy of destruction and natural beauty serves as a poignant canvas, reflecting both the despair and the undying hope that drives our characters.

  • FEB 2022-PRESENT (SYNOPSIS)

The metal plate in his knee from a racetrack crash he suffered years ago, means Dmitriy is ineligible for military service. When Russia attacked, he searched for a way to help the war effort by any means available. A few of his friends devised a plan to deliver aid to the civilians that had remained in Kherson, a city on the edge of the war zone. Dmitriy volunteered to join them, but only an hour into distributing food and other amenities, a military officer warned of an imminent Russian attack and advised they leave immediately. Almost on cue, rockets began to rain down. The small crew barely escaped by driving on the wrong side of the highway, past the column of vehicles attempting to flee the city and at points needed to take cover in the trees on the side of the road when the shelling was too close to continue.

  • FEB 2022-PRESENT (SYNOPSIS)

Dmitriy’s wife, Ana, was irate and, after catching an earful of her wrath over the phone, he vowed that he would not go into any active war zones again. His next opportunity to assist in the conflict came quickly and unexpectedly. While on the road back to Odessa, a soldier at a military checkpoint recognized him as the famous drift car driver and asked for assistance in fixing up his military SUV that was badly in need of repair. Dmitriy gave him the address to his race shop and later that day outfitted the decrepit vehicle with a bigger set of tires, some light armor plating, and a change of fluids. Word got around that he could fix and improve vehicles and soon an almost constant flow of Ukrainian soldiers started showing up in need of help.

  • FEB 2022-PRESENT (SYNOPSIS)

With his mechanical mastery and his connections with parts sponsors out of the country, Dmitriy was able to take care of hundreds of vehicles. However, they were being destroyed faster than he could repair them. It was time for a new plan, so he decided to import used SUV’s from other places in Europe. A national decree that no men could leave the country meant that he could not retrieve them himself, but Dmitriy’s female friend and fellow mechanic, Leina, who had remained in the country, volunteered to take a transport rig across the border to aquire whatever cars Dmitriy could find for sale online.

When asked how many cars he has fixed up and/or imported, he replied, “I have no idea. I lost track. I don’t think there is a single Nissan SUV left in the entirety of Europe.”

  • FEB 2022-PRESENT (SYNOPSIS)

For the last year and a half, Dmitriy has been utilizing his skills as a master mechanic, his ability to import and export vehicles, and sponsor connections to help in the war effort. After going through the necessary paperwork late last year, Dmitriy is now allowed to move freely across the border to visit his family as often as he can. At the start of the war, Ana and their two sons took refuge with friends in Switzerland and have now acquired a flat of their own in Geneva where the boys attend school. The younger is already fluent in Swiss French, which Dmitriy finds to be a bitter sweet outcome in a time of traumatic change. “I just want my family to be home, where they belong, but I’m glad my boys are getting a good education.”
