  • STORY SUMMARY (ACT I)

    START YOUR ENGINES.

Engines roar, dirt flies, and crowds cheer as a series of race cars tear through a racetrack. At the heart of this high-speed ballet is Mykola Koval, known in the racing world as "Myko," his car a striking blue and yellow, echoing the colors of the Ukrainian flag. He’s door to door with a competitor, expertly sliding around the corners at a ridiculous pace all the way across the finish line. He decisively wins the contest, but due to a technicality, his victory is snatched away by a controversial ruling from the judges, hinting at political tensions.

Back in the pits, his mechanic, Yana, protests, saying that the Russian judges are biased against him. Mykola is a “roll with the punches” kind of guy, but his ego won’t let him stand back and do nothing. He knows that he’s a fan favorite so rather than quietly taking the loss, Myko grabs a microphone, walks out onto the track, and gives an impassioned speech, ultimately leading the crowd to boo the judges and winning driver. He may have technically lost the race, but it's the humiliated judges and belittled winning driver who lost the respect of the fans.

  • STORY SUMMARY (ACT I)

As they prepare to return to Odessa, one of Myko’s friends and British racer, Liam brings ominous news of an imminent attack on Ukraine. Mykola rushes home to his family, leaving Yana to navigate the race car transport semi back alone. Mykola arrives home to missiles tearing through the sky. He, his wife Nina, and their two children pile into one of his old race cars and he uses every bit of his amazing driving skills to get them to Nina’s parents’ house across town.

Along the way, they come across their son’s karate teacher, Mr. Petrenko, and his family helplessly stuck in the ditch. Rockets continue flying overhead, but Mykola helps them and the two families hunker down in the basement at Nina’s parents, Nana and Pop Pop’s house. Myko, usually so full of life, is introspective, troubled by the news of looming conflict. At Nina's parents' house, amidst the fear and uncertainty, Myko finds an unexpected ally in Pop Pop, Nina's father. Their relationship, once strained by Myko's flashy lifestyle and Pop Pop's stern military background, finds common ground in the fight to protect their family. The group hatches a plan to escape Ukraine before the borders close, but it requires a trip to Mykola’s race shop to gather supplies and his big American pick-up truck, fondly named “Beef Cake.”

  • STORY SUMMARY (ACT I)

The next day, Mykola and Mr. Petrenko put their plan into action, but their visit to his race shop intertwines Myko’s fate with that of his country, as a team of Ukrainian soldiers beg for his expertise for their battered vehicles. Reluctantly, he obliges and quickly upgrades their SUV with bigger tires, drills some makeshift metal paneling to the doors to help with bullet proofing, and changes the fluids. Myko's journey from egotistical champion to reluctant hero begins. The skills that made him a star on the track are now his greatest asset in a fight for survival.

Nana and Pop Pop refuse to leave their home despite the pending danger and unforeseen circumstances force the two families to make one final stop at the race shop before heading to the border before it closes for good at sunset. When they arrive, there are more Ukrainian soldiers looking for help with their car. The families watch Mykola expertly and quickly repair the vehicle, attaching sheets of scrap metal over the bullet holes in the doors, while Nina tends to the minor wounds of the soldiers.

  • STORY SUMMARY (ACT I)

As the two families drive off for the border, now with two working cars, there is an uneasy feeling in the air about leaving the country when the soldiers need Mykola’s expert help. The two families sit in a painfully long line of cars waiting to cross into Moldova. Myko's world has shifted on its axis and a solemn, collective decision is made. He and Petrenko will stay behind to help with the war effort. This marks a pivotal moment. Myko, once driven by personal glory, now considers working toward something far greater—the safety of his family and the future of his country.

THE CHARACTERS

Mykola Koval (late 30s) - The skilled, but reluctant leader

Mykola, or "Myko" as he's known in the racing circuits, is a charismatic and skilled professional race car driver, whose life has been a whirlwind tour of high-speed races, champagne celebrations, and global recognition. He possesses natural charm and a quick wit, which have always made him a media darling and a favorite among fans. However, the outbreak of war in his homeland forces him to confront a harsh reality where life is fragile and the stakes are beyond personal achievements. His expertise isn't limited to just racing; he's also a master mechanic, able to understand and fix complex automotive problems with ease.

CHARACTER ARC

Mykola evolves from a world-renowned racecar driver, focused on personal glory, to a strategic, almost tragic wartime leader. Accustomed to competing alone, Mykola initially resists taking on a leadership role, but must learn to inspire and guide others, not just through actions but also through empathy and understanding.

Mr. Petrenko (mid 40s) - The Loveable Underdog

Mr. Petrenko, previously known for his calm and disciplined approach as a karate teacher, finds himself in a starkly different reality with the onset of war. He is the quintessential 'fish out of water' in this new scenario, often feeling out of his depth amidst the more experienced and battle-ready members of the group. His lack of driving skills, in a team where driving is almost a second nature, adds to his challenges. Despite these shortcomings, Petrenko’s endearing personality and occasional clumsiness provide a much-needed comedic relief in tense situations. He's the kind of person who might accidentally set off a car alarm in a stealth mission, but his heart is always in the right place.

CHARACTER ARC

Mr. Petrenko’s journey is about finding his own unique way to contribute to the group's efforts, despite not fitting the typical hero mold. Initially overwhelmed and prone to bumbling errors, he needs to overcome his self-doubt and find confidence in his unique abilities.

Nina Koval (late 30s) - The Resilient Protector & Steadfast Companion

Nina is the embodiment of resilience and determination and shares the same passion for driving as her husband, Myko. Though she’s a formidable driver in her own right, her strength also lies in unwavering support and deep love for her family. Nina's presence is a blend of warmth and steeliness, making her both a nurturing mother and a fierce protector.

CHARACTER ARC

While her primary concern is the safety of her children, Nina's singular focus sometimes blinds her to the bigger picture and the realities of the situation. She must learn the value of teamwork and trust, understanding that sometimes, leaning on others (the way they so often lean on her) is not a weakness but a necessity.

Yana (mid 30s) - The Blunt Maverick & No-Nonsense Expert

Yana, Mykola’s head mechanic, truck driver, and best friend, is a force to be reckoned with. Her personality is as tough as the engines she repairs – straightforward, hard working, and uncompromising. She’s earned widespread respect for her exceptional mechanical skills and is the person you want in your corner when things get tough. Yana's blunt demeanor might rub some people the wrong way, but her heart is fiercely loyal to those she cares about.

CHARACTER ARC

Yana starts off as a stubborn, single-minded character, accustomed to relying solely on herself and seeing the world as practically as she sees an engine. Throughout the story, she grows into a vital and collaborative member of the resistance, learning the importance of softening her edges and understanding that there's strength in vulnerability and cooperation. Her journey is about balancing a rigid worldview with moments of empathy and understanding, especially in a war-torn environment where emotions run high.

Pop Pop (70s) - The Sage Connector & Seasoned Mentor

Pop Pop, Nina's father, is a figure of wisdom and experience. An ex-military man, he carries a lifetime of knowledge and connections that become invaluable in the war effort. He didn't initially approve of Nina's choice in a husband, due to his flashy race car driver lifestyle, but seeing Myko’s transformation in war time, brings his level of respect for his son-in-law to a new level. His beloved wife Nana does most of the traditional nurturing for the both of them, but under Pop Pop’s tough exterior, hides a deep well of understanding and empathy that comes out when necessary.

CHARACTER ARC

Pop Pop evolves from a behind-the-scenes facilitator to a mentor and strategic advisor, guiding the younger generation in their resistance efforts. His arc is about finding new purpose and relevance in a rapidly changing world, and bridging the gap between his old-school military tactics and the unconventional warfare of the present.

THE WORLD

RAW & VISCERAL

WAR MACHINES unfolds in a Ukraine caught in the throes of present-day conflict; a landscape scarred by war yet still clinging to remnants of its haunting beauty.

The setting is a character in its own right, oscillating between the rubble-strewn streets of besieged cities and the sprawling, desolate countryside that tells its own tale of neglect and devastation. Amidst this backdrop, our characters navigate through once-bustling towns now ghostly and silent, past buildings pockmarked with the scars of battle.

Yet, in this desolation, there's a stark beauty — the resilient sunsets painting the sky above the war-torn structures, the stubborn wildflowers breaking through cracks in the asphalt. This dichotomy of destruction and natural beauty serves as a poignant canvas, reflecting both the despair and the undying hope that drives our characters.

STYLE & TONE

The tone of the film draws inspiration from the likes of RED DAWN & EXTRACTION, where characters are thrown into extraordinary circumstances, yet their humanity and relatable struggles are never overshadowed by the action. This film isn’t just about the roar of engines and the thunder of guns; it's a moving journey through the resilience of the human spirit, punctuated by heart-stopping action and raw, emotional depth.

Our story weaves through the harsh, war-ravaged landscapes of Ukraine with the gritty realism of THE HURT LOCKER. However, Mykola’s journey isn’t just physical. It’s also an emotional odyssey. The camera stays close, almost claustrophobic at times, capturing every furrowed brow and determined glance, making the audience feel every heartbeat, every moment of doubt, and every surge of hope. It’s this personal lens that elevates the film from a mere action flick to an elegant exploration of human endurance.

Despite the backdrop of conflict, our characters have not yet become battle-hardened or desensitized to the chaos around them, yet they carry an air of dry humor nonetheless. A coping mechanism that reflects their steadfast spirit and serves, not only as a respite for our characters, but as a beacon of light for the audience.

The film knows its mission: Race along a razor's edge between the grim realities of war and the exhilarating rush of blockbuster escapism.

THEMES & SYMBOLS

Resilience

At its core, the film explores the theme of resilience — the human capacity to endure, adapt, and overcome in the face of overwhelming adversity. Mykola’s journey symbolizes a new search for identity and purpose in a world turned upside down, a theme that resonates universally, reminding viewers of the ongoing quest for meaning in our own lives.

Sacrifice & Heroism

Mykola risks his life in this new arena, no longer for fame or fortune, but due to a growing sense of duty and compassion. This theme is further accentuated by his initial reluctance; he is not a traditional hero seeking glory but an ordinary individual compelled by extraordinary situations. His heroism is nuanced, devoid of his former grandstanding. Instead, it's in his quiet determination, his willingness to put others' lives before his own, and in the silent acceptance of the heavy toll each decision carries.

 Coping Mechanisms

Wryness, used deftly throughout the film, emerges as a theme in itself — a symbol of defiance against despair, a tool for coping, and a bridge that connects characters from disparate backgrounds.
